Withdrawn UK banknotes

I just thought to check the money brought back from our last Europe trip to be sure the UK banknotes were still good. Fortunately they are, but if your last time in the UK was prior to 2018 and you brought home some currency in anticipation of your next trip, here is where you can check to see if the notes have been withdrawn from circulation, and what to do about that:

After seeing an alert about this on TripAdvisor, and checking my own supply, I remembered that I gave the last of my old pre-2018 £10 notes to some friends from England we met up in Slovenia for a rowing regatta at Lake Bled in September 2017.

Thank you Lola. Yes, I was last there in 2018 and some of mine have been withdrawn. I'll save that website for when I make it back to UK!

I like to fly British Airways and a few years ago when I found my "saved for a future trip" money was no longer in circulation, I donated it in the envelopes BA has on board for charity. I hoped that if they got enough out of circulation money that they would be able to take the time to get it exchanged.

Very useful link! I think I have a 10 pound note that is out of circulation, but will just keep as a souvenir. I tend to spend down any non-Euro notes as I may never return to some countries or it may be a long time in between trips, so having the equivalent of $10 or so isn't a big loss. Last trip to London in 2019 I used a self-checkout at the airport for snacks etc and was thrilled to think I was using up all my coins...only to be about .50 p short and had to use a credit card anyway 😁

If you have to change notes its very simple. Just go to the Bank of England and see one of the tellers in the lobby. I've had to do this a couple of times. It didn't take very long.

I was looking for a money changer in LA a few months ago and found someone nearby, but on Yelp they were called out for giving out old money. They had some half-hearted excuse.

I've gotten stuck with some Mexican pesos as well. My bank would not change notes that were >10 years old even if the style was still the same.

I used some old coins to buy an old book as a souvenir gift at an antiquarian shop in bankside and the shopkeeper was thrilled to get them. The coins had been sitting in a jar at my uncle's since the late '50s, and it didn't occur to me until after the transaction that the shopkeeper was probably getting the much better end of the deal.
