Can anyone point me towards any sort of guide for using VRBO in Europe? Most particularly, how do I search for the property numbers often noted in reviews?

if you go to vrbo.com you will see that you can either search by area or by property number. You can then input your travel dates to see if the property is available fro the dates that you are looking for.
You can then look at pics of the property, read reviews, see amenities offered etc. You can also email the owner to ask any questions or confirm total cost of rental.
We have used VRBO many times including in Europe and have had great experiences

We have used VRBO in Paris, Barcelona, Seville, and Rome Italy as well as in US locations. Have had a super experience each time. I believe VRBO (geared more to US audience although world wide destinations) has now merged with HomeAway.com (more geared to a European market) but many cross listings. If you don't find what you want on VRBO, try HomeAway.com. Listing #s are different even for same apartments. I prefer the search options on VRBO.com, but I use both sites.

You can also use Booking.com and limit your results to apartments. Sometimes the same place will be listed there, on HomeAway and VRBO.
