United MileagePlus X App to Accumulate United Miles

I just started using United MileagePlus X App and wanted to share it with everyone. It's an easy way to accumulate United miles or to extend the deadline if your United miles are due to expire soon due to inactivity.

Here's how United describes the App:
" MileagePlus X is a mobile app that allows members to earn award miles when shopping or dining at participating merchants. Members select a merchant, enter a dollar amount and are issued a gift card. A barcode/gift card number and PIN are displayed in the app and can be used for a current or future purchase. These gift cards can be used like a traditional debit card until the balance is depleted. Either way, the gift card is used as the form of payment instead of a credit card."

I mostly use it when purchasing at Amazon or a local restaurant that participates in the program. The only drawback so far that I have found is you will receive a gift card balance if you have to return something. Not a big deal, but something to consider.

To use it, you simply open the App on your smart phone, select the merchant, select your payment method (you save your credit card(s) during setup), and type in the exact amount of the gift card you need. If my Amazon purchase was for $56.27, then I would purchase the exact amount of $56.27. The App will instantly charge my credit card the $56.27, then it produces a Gift Card Number that I use when purchasing my Amazon products. Easy Peasy.

Amazon will give you 2 miles per dollar purchased, but there are some merchants that will give you 5 miles per dollar such as Overstock.com, Petco, Old Navy, The Limited, Panera Bread, etc.

I also received 500 United Miles just for using the App one time.

Here's the United Link with the FAQs.

I have received sooooo much info from this site, that I hope I can pass on some helpful information to someone else. :D

I love it! I do most of my shopping through Amazon (I live in the middle of nowhere of the middle of nowhere) so love the miles!

A few years ago, I availed myself of a new refrigerator at Sears with 5 points per mile. Refrig was on sale, ~7500 free miles. It sounds like the app you mention automates that process.

Kaeleku, Sears is part of the program. I used it last weekend to buy a lounge chair for my deck. :D

"Christi, have you tried this App yet? It takes a bit to set up, but it's easy to use once you get the hang of it."

Many times - it was easy - add a credit card and you MP account info. Pick the type of card you want, enter the amount and purchase - then enter the GC # on your online order or the store can enter it at purchase.

I just need to remember to keep the total below the max amount for each company - Amazon is $500 so split in two orders.

Kaeleku, I used something similar to this to extend my American Airline miles. I went to American Airlines Shopping section and linked it to my iTunes purchase.

I was scrambling to extend my American Airlines miles, and I was able to extend it for another year or so with a 99 cent song purchase. I wanted the song too - so it wasn't a waste of money.

Yes! I found out about the United Miles App about 6 months ago. I would love to use it, but I live in a city of 50k people, so there aren't a lot of options. I was surprised in a city of 50k, there weren't a lot of options...

I went to Barnes and Noble to use the app, so I could get miles, but they said their scanner doesn't work on phones. Really? I was sorely disappointed at Barnes and Noble.

Klo, Barnes and Noble does participate in the program and you would get 4 miles per dollar. Barnes and Noble wouldn't have to scan your phone. You would purchase a gift card through the App and then simply give the cashier the gift card number.

I usually figure out the total before I get to the cashier and get the gift card number before I get in line. Then I write down the gift card number on a piece of paper and hand the paper to the cashier so they can type it in to pay for the transaction. This will avoid me taking up too much time in line. The cashier never gets involved with the App.

Yes - at the register if they can not scan they can enter the GC # manually. And there are lots of online retailers.

The closest town to me has a population of 20 - the next large town - 6886! It's Amazon for me!

Christi, I didn't even realize the cashier could scan the gift card number. Good to know - I just learned something :D

Primary cardmembers of a United MileagePlus® Credit Card from Chase will receive bonus miles in connection with each MileagePlus X transaction equal to 25% multiplied by the miles otherwise awarded by MileagePlus in connection with transactions made through MileagePlus X. Fractions of miles will not be awarded in connection with the cardmember bonus, and the number of miles awarded will be rounded down to the nearest whole number. Not available for authorized users.

Use your MileagePlus credit card on purchases in the MileagePlus X app to earn miles in three ways:

Your standard mileage bonus for using your MileagePlus credit card
Up to 5 miles per dollar spent for paying with MileagePlus X, depending on the merchant
The 25% award mile bonus for Chase MileagePlus primary cardmembers

So theoretically you could double dip with this program - buy something using the app - pay using mileage card.

Kaeleku, yes, you could accumulate miles using the App, and then pay with the United MileagePlus Visa to accumulate miles as well - double dip :D

However, you can also use the App if you do not have the United MileagePlus Visa. I use my Amazon Visa when I purchase Amazon products so I can get 3 points per dollar on Amazon products. I accumulate United Miles and Amazon points on the same purchase. :D

"they said their scanner doesn't work on phones."

Sometimes scanners only work on phones when you've turned up the brightness to the highest setting. I learned about this on Amtrak; when they go through the train checking tickets, they ask everyone to turn up the brightness on their devices, and it seems to work.

Glad the info could help. The miles show up immediately in your United account as soon as you use the App - so it's nice to see how fast it works. The 500 bonus miles you receive for first using the App might take 8-10 weeks to show up in your account though.
