Travel benefits of credit cards

Yesterday I was looking at booking a rental car for next year and checking prices. I know my Delta AMEX card covers CDW but I wasn’t sure about the others and was trying to figure out which card to use. While I was looking through the various card benefits, I noticed a number of other benefits that I had never really paid much attention to. I do get regular travel insurance, too, but it's nice ot have these other benefits.

I created a spreadsheet of all the travel benefits my cards offer, and have listed the ones I have below (I did not include basic benefits specific to that card, such as FF miles, free checked bags, etc).

Chase Sapphire Preferred, which I do not have now, has very good trip cancellation/delay coverage and also primary car rental coverage, so I’m thinking of adding that.

Anyway, I was wondering what other cards forum members have with good travel benefits.

American Express (Delta SKYMiles Gold)
Car rental coverage (secondary in US or pay $20-25 flat fee for primary coverage)
Coverage for lost, damaged, or stolen baggage
Travel and emergency assistance
No foreign transaction fees

Bank of America credit card benefits
Car rental coverage (secondary in US)
Travel and emergency assistance
Trip cancellation and interruption
Maximum of $1500 or original cost (includes Covid-related illness)

Chase (Marriott Bonvoy) credit card benefits
Car rental coverage (secondary in US)
Baggage delay coverage
Lost luggage reimbursement
No foreign transaction fees
Travel and emergency assistance
Roadside assistance while traveling (not free)
Trip delay reimbursement

Citi Costco card
Car rental coverage (secondary in US)
Roadside assistance while traveling (not free)
Travel and emergency assistance

USAA Credit Card
Car rental coverage (secondary in US)
Baggage delay coverage
No foreign transaction fees
Travel and emergency assistance
Travel accident insurance
Trip cancellation and interruption
Maximum of $1500 or original cost

I like Chase Sapphire Reserve. Fee is $550 of which you get a direct $300 travel credit. So Cost down to $250/year. That is less than I might end up paying for travel insurance if bought separately and includes many other benefits as well.
Travel Benefits
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver, up to $75,000
Baggage Delay $100/day
Emergency Evacuation/Transportation $100,000
Emergency Medical and Dental $2500
Lost Luggage up to $3000
Roadside assistance $50/per need
Travel and Emergency Assistance hot line
Trip Cancellation/Interruption 10,000 per person, 20,000 max per trip
Trip Delay Reimbursement up to $500 ticket

Priority Pass Membership for airport lounge use
$100 Global Entry/Nexus Credit
No Foreign Transaction Fees
3% rebate on travel costs, 1% rebate all other costs
Ability to transfer points to multiple frequent flier programs.

There are additional benefits relating to consumer purchases as well.

They are currently giving a 60,000 point bonus for signing up which you could claim as a $600 cash credit on your card if you desired or use their travel portal for $900 in travel costs.

Just to clarify your info: Both my BAC Travel Rewards card and BAC Premier Rewards card do not have foreign transaction fees.

Carol, very good to know - thanks! I could probably give up a few other cards with this.

horsewoofie, I'm sure you're right - I could not find the Bank of America card benefits online and finally resorted to looking through the paperwork I have, which is in VERY fine print, so I'm sure I just missed it. Thank you for the clarification!

I use the CapitalOne Venture X card that has a $395 fee but you get $300 in travel credits. Earns 2 pts (equiv to miles) per $ spent. Has the Priority Pass lounge access + they just added another 100 or so Premium Plaza lounges. It has full rental car coverage.

The great thing about this is that you can request 3 additional cards for family members (free), etc. who can also get the lounge access via Priority pass

If people are looking for cards, I like to point out that there can be a "best" card depending on whether you are wanting a card that provides benefits like points and perks to save for travel and cover major segments of it (like Rental insurance and travel insurance) and/or a card that features advantages to use while traveling.

After much looking I settled on a two card solution.

I have the Delta AMEX Reserve card that I use year round to gain miles, plus bonus miles that are Medallion Qualification Miles, and a Medallion Qualification Dollars waiver. I also get:
Free Checked bags
Preferred Upgrades
Separate number for travel/ticket issues
Free Lounge access
Guest vouchers for lounge access
Drink vouchers for flights
Plus the premium rental insurance (flat fee for rental), travel insurance, purchase protection, etc.
Basically I use the AMEX for booking and daily use, and for travel on Delta (which is 90% of the time)

As my travel card, meaning the one I use daily when traveling, I went with the United Nations Federal Credit Union Elite Visa. That features:
No FTF
A PIN for purchases, which is PIN priority, meaning when used it will prompt for a PIN (even in the US at POS units), it is also contactless.
Low interest rate if I choose to not pay off
Low fees ($5 or 2% of transaction) if I should ever need a cash advance.
Plus many of the other normal travel benefits.

I of course have other back-up cards, and a couple ATM/Debit cards which are seeing less and less use.

Great list, Mardee.

I will add the Alaska Airlines Visa card from Bank of America. It has no foreign transaction fees, earns miles in the Alaska mileage program, and every year on your anniversary date you earn a companion voucher good for a 2d ticket anywhere Alaska flies (including Mexico and Hawaii) for $121 when booked with a paid ticket.

Right now they have a “signing bonus” of 40,000 miles plus a BOGO ticket offer (this is different from the companion voucher) after you meet the required spend of $3000 on the card.

Arnold, the CapitalOne looks very interesting - I will add that to my list of possible cards and check it out further. Thank you!

Paul, that's very good point - I need to lump them all together so that is definitely something to think about when choosing a card. And thank you for all the good info about your cards. I will look at them as well. Thanks!

Lola, that sounds like a pretty nice deal! I always forget about Alaska Airlines because I live so far away but they do fly into MSP. Thanks!

Carol,
You had me at $300 Tavel credit! (always enjoy reading your clear, concise posts) I’ve wanted to get the Chase Sapphire Reserve card for some time but the fee discouraged me, still using United Mileage Plus card from Chase.
My question to all of you is what do you do about credit cards no longer wanted as I heard it affects your credit if you cancel them and I sure don’t want to pay multiple yearly fees on cards not used.

Bella, here's my take on that. I have excellent credit (as do probably most people on this forum) and cancelling one or two credit cards with fees will certainly not put much of a dent in someone's credit, imo. I wouldn't worry about the ones that don't have an annual fee. I just stick them in a drawer someplace and don't use them. :)
