Scotland is cheaper

As many here know, I live in hotels full time. I had planned to spend the summer in the USA, mostly relaxing and planning future travels. But inflation is killing me.

With tax, hotels are hovering around $180-200/nite and rental car rates have gone from about $30/day pre covid to over $100/day now. ($150/day this week.)

The temperature has been in the mid to high 90's daily. And humid.

So I looked to see what it's like at a nice extended stay hotel I've frequented in the past in a smaller city in Scotland. They want about $120/day for a room with a kitchen, free breakfast and free laundry facilities. (And they always seem to upgrade me to a one bedroom suite.) There, I won't need a car.

The high temperatures in that area of Scotland are around 70 degrees.

With the flight, I expect to still save about $2000 by going to Scotland than staying in the US. And I'll be in Scotland.

I leave next week.

Does this change your ideas about settling into a base in the US in the future? I remember you had asked for ideas about possible locations with a set of criteria. Happy Travels to Scotland.

Good for you. As an FYI can you share where this extended stay accommodation is located.

I’m still considering Scotland for Christmas but need to decide soon.

Thnx

Hi Frank, my husband is thinking Scotland would be much more expensive! I read him your plans, and he immediately said, “How much are the green fees?” His dream is to play golf in Scotland.

Have a great time and definitely cooler weather!

I'll be at the Staybridge Suites in Dundee. It's about an hour and 15 minutes by train to Edinburgh and a little over an hour to Aberdeen. There are flights from London City Airport and Belfast direct to Dundee on Loganair.

It's more like staying in an apartment than a hotel. The European Staybridges are much better than the USA Staybridge Suites.

There isn't lot to do in Dundee but I go to relax and plan. The hotel shares the building with Hotel Indigo if people don't need the kitchen. Originally, the building was a mill as Dundee was a mill town.

St. Andrews is 13 miles away for the golfers.

I would love to settle in Scotland but I don't qualify for any UK visa.

Except for during the pandemic, I have spent a few Christmas/New Years in London and one in Manchester.

It’s interesting you say this because I’ve been researching a trip to Scotland and I actually just thought to myself, “wow, the hotels are cheaper than I was expecting.” And we are Marriott, Radisson, and Hilton kind of people.

It’s likely to be humid in Scotland i.e. raining! Enjoy your trip.

Kim, thank you very much for the information as I am planning a Half day in Aberdeen on my way from Inverness. I will definitely fit the Aberdeen Art Gallery into my day.

Thanks Kim. I was thinking of taking a day trip to Aberdeen as the only time I was there was to transfer from the airport to the rail station.

Frank you are spot on about Staybridge Suites Dundee. It's my favourite hotel in the area and I often need to travel to Dunblane. Even though it's a 40 minute drive from Dunblane I always stay at the Staybridge in Dundee.
