Medical and Evacuation Insurance

There is a great wealth of information and experience on this site. I have long lurked and learned from the shadows. I have reached that age and a recent diagnosis drove the point home, my wife and I should purchase Trip Medical Insurance.

Has anyone used GeoBlue? We are looking at an annual policy for medical and evacuation up to $1 mil. The premium seems reasonable at $481 for the 2 of us and unlimited trips. Any feedback at all is appreciated. Advice and suggestions of alternate companies or plans are welcome.

Read the medical evacuation section carefully.

Some companies will pay for you to be evacuated only to the nearest hospital while others will evacuate you to the hospital of your choice.

I have an annual travel insurance policy with Allianz but I also have a separate medical evacuation policy with Medjet Express. (You can get a discount if you are a member of AARP.)

We carry the same two policies plus a cash reserve in case there is an immediate need for some type of payment upfront.

Make sure that your recent diagnosis will be covered.

I used GeoBlue for a number of years and appreciated the tools they have on their website. Fortunately I never had to use the services while traveling, but it was definitely peace of mind. I now bundle my medical-related insurance with travel insurance for a variety of reasons - I find the website squaremouth.com to be a good source of policies from a variety of companies and they give you the ability to set the parameters of what kind of policy you are looking for, including pre-existing and evacuation. It could be a second source of information and possible policies for you.

Thinking I should consider travel and health insurance for my week in Paris.

I am going to give Allianz a call partly because I have heard so many good things about them not just on this site but others as well.

So even Medjet is discounted for Cyber Monday (and Tuesday) I first will double check our need for it. We've always had evacuation with our health insurance, but policies can change yearly. Looks like the discount on a yearly policy for my husband ($425) is $75. It makes more more inclined to take a serious look at it.

There is also AirMed - which is the company I buy from.

MedJet has extra hoops and limitations for those over 75. They sell only a "Diamond" policy for over-75 - and it requires your primary doctor to fill out a two page form. It also says that if you've seen a specialist or been hospitalized, you need to submit the two page form from those providers as well. It also limits you to a single transfer in one year.

Because AirMed is much simpler and does not require all of these medical notes, I choose them. They offer the same - evacuation to a hospital of your choice - and have their own aircraft, just like MedJet.

We purchase GeoBlue for international travel. Last year we had to file a claim online for treatment (equivalent of urgent care situation) in France. We kept all receipts (doctor, facility, pharmacy) and submitted them on our return home and were quickly reimbursed. The cost of the policy was more than the cost of treatment, but we purchase in the event of a big medical situation.
