I had a year of no-interest payments on a Discover card, which is accepted almost nowhere. I made purchases/charges on Visa and MasterCards and then transferred the balances to the Discover card before interest charges kicked in. Small charge for the transfer.
I have a Capital One credit card that I use only for necessary European travel purchases (prefer to use cash from ATM's - my credit union does not charge an extra fee for conversion). Capital One is one of the few (only?) credit cards that do not charge a fee for converting your purchase from euros to dollars. Many cards charge 3-6%, which just adds to the cost of an item. I can only afford to travel with a budget so these are two ways that help me travel more.
