Large amount of Euro's needed in Austria

Hi,
I am taking my daughter to Austria Race Camp in Hintertux next month. They require a cash payment of around 4,000 EU upon arrival. What is the best way to get that sum of EU? Seems like my local bank offers conversion but it might be expensive. We take a shuttle from Munich to Hintetux on a Sunday so banking in Munich will not be possible. Would buying a 4-5 1,000 EU prepaid debit card be better? Thanks

That is a huge amount to pay in cash. Are you sure they won’t take card payments or a bank transfer? I have googled and it looks like a very professional and long running organisation. It would be unusual for them to want to handle large amounts of cash.

We kindly ask for payment in cash of the total amount on the first evening during the camp meeting to the coach/representative of Austria Racing Camps. Please note that we have no possibility to accept credit cards in the ski resort. We hope for your understanding.

I have heard from others that Hintertux is notorious for cash only establishments too. So probably need a decent amount of spending cash while there too. Google tells me that under 10,000 I should be fine with customs.

Check with wise.com
You might be able to transfer USD to them and transfer it to a Euro account and get a debit card. Or you could use them to transfer the funds directly to the vendor. Their conversion and transfer rates are reasonable and hard to beat. Earlier this year I received an insurance reimbursement for auto damage in Italy. The rental company was based in Germany and could only transfer the money using the SWIFT system - transfers to European banks but not us. I already had a USD account at Wise and opened a Euro account. The funds went into the Euro account and then I just transferred them to my USD account. Sounds convoluted but it was actually pretty easy.

I can’t believe that the race camp would accept only cash. If I were you, I would double check with them either by email or telephone to see what other options there are rather than carrying that much cash.

I was in Austria about a week ago. I was surprised how often I needed cash .... but 4 grand? That just sounds .... But I doubt that you will do better at that scale than your bank. Then I guess you will need a money belt. I once carried just shy of $10,000 to Europe, and it wasn't without some tense moments. Do be sure to carry the invoice with the cash.

We had to pay cash to VRBO hosts in Amsterdam. We made our deposit via a credit card but the hosts requested the rest in cash, and it was more than 1000 €.

I ordered cash online from my bank (Wells Fargo) and had it delivered to a branch, where I picked it up about a week before our trip.

I divided the cash between myself and my husband while we traveled so one of us wasn't responsible for the whole amount.

I didn't even look at how much it cost; I knew that trying to find bank ATMs in Amsterdam and making multiple withdrawals to get the amount we needed was more hassle than it was going to be worth, and we needed cash as soon as we landed.

And be sure to get a receipt for the €4,000!

However you carry the money do be sure not to carry it all in one spot. If have option mix it with a couple different people and in difference places- money belt or roll some up in lipstick tube or put inside socks in your shoes etc. You might also carry a slash /tamper proof cross body bag etc. Safe travels.

That is quite an amount to carry around. The most I've carried on me was on this trip when the total amount was 2100 Euro in cash.

I would definitely not use a prepaid debit card for this purpose. There have been too many reports about prepaid cards (credit or debit--I don't know which, maybe both) simply not working in Europe. There can be fees as well.

Dont forget the airports have money sniffing dogs. They nailed me once at IAH because I had over 200.000 in small bills in my carryon... 200.000 Hungarian forints. The guard laughed at me.

You will have to take it with you because you won’t be able to withdraw that much in one day from at ATM. I find it so weird that they want €4K in cash.

As mentioned about ATM daily withdrawal limits, between what a bank’s ATM will let you take out, plus whatever limit your own bank sets as a daily maximum, you’ll need several days and several ATM withdrawals to reach that €4,000 amount. I wonder how many participants will be registering at the Race Camp, each paying €4,000 in cash? That’s a lot of cash for the Race Camp to be handling on the spot.

4000 euro in cash per participant on the first day of camp. I feel like I'll be reading about an armed cash heist at the Austrian Race Camp in Hintertux some day.

Just a FYI and to be fair. This is the first class package with private lessons, upgraded hotel room etc. The standard package is couple hundred.
