Am I right that having a mini-fridge and microwave in your hotel room is not as common in Europe as in the US?
I see kettles or coffee makers and hairdryers listed in the amenities, but not fridges and microwaves.
khansen, IME there are some places where they explicitly do not want you eating in your room. France is one place where I saw this posted in hotels. I'm interested in hearing others' observations.
We often have a mini-fridge in our room at hotels. The fridge may also contain items for purchase, but you can still put in some yogurt or wine. The only time we ever have a microwave is if we stay at an aparthotel. Aparthotels can be really good options - you generally have more space and a kitchenette with a mini fridge, microwave and a 2 burner stove. Sometimes there is even a dishwasher.
Many hotels have a small fridge in hotel rooms that hold drinks. In France I have often used them for yogurt and cheese to enjoy during my stay. I always ensure that I dispose of food wrap etc myself. I think microwaves can be found in apart-hotels as they are set up with mini kitchenettes.
That is correct. A mini fridge is becoming more common, but microwaves are not common.
Yes, Europe is not the USA.
"France is one place where I saw this posted in hotels."
In a couple of my regular hotels where this used to be posted, the signs disappeared during the pandemic. They had not returned as of last Fall when I stayed in one that had previously had signage.
Oddly at that hotel I'd gone down to eat breakfast a few years ago and found the whole breakfast area full so the breakfast lady, who recognized me as I'd been there for a week or so, offered to get me a tray to take upstairs to my room. I was shocked because I'd always adhered to the no food sign.
But yes, few have a microwave in France but most have a kettle or some kind of coffee maker.
a number of hotels I have been to since covid in France and Germany have turned off or removed the fridges. I haven't seen one recently at some of our usual haunts - the Dorint chain (in Classic rooms) and IHG lower than Crowne Plaza.
Microwaves? No way. Can't remember one in places we have stayed anywhere in Europe since the Suitehotels chain of Accor died a death about 10 years ago.
There are many hotel chains that offer fridges and microwaves....and then some......
Adagio Hotels (Accor)
Adina Hotels
Staybridge Suites (IHG)
Residence Inn (Marriott)
Hyatt House (Hyatt)
Citadines
Fraser Suites

Hotels in the US that normally have fridges and microwaves but not in Europe are Hampton by Hilton and Holiday Inn Express. (Some have fridges.)
Additionally, there are newer aparthotels not part of chains that can be found almost anywhere. (Perhaps not small towns.)
Aparthotels/Extended stay are the fastest growing segment of the hotel industry.
I like staying in hotels that have both but do try to find ones that have at least a kettle and a fridge. Rick Steves recommmended hotels usually don't have either.
Frank II is right, the name you want to ask for is an aparthotel. That will get you a small kitchenette and sometimes a washing machine. Depending on the configuration it might also mean a separate bedroom that can be shut off from the living area. It's not traditional for there to be a microwave in a normal European hotel. Many also do not have kettles or coffee makers unless the hotel is a bit better quality. I have stayed in Adagios, Adinas and Citadines and they are good for anything from a night to several weeks. However bring your own corkscrew :) .
