Let me explain . . .
We took a cruise to Europe last spring. Needing a flight back, we opted for a round trip with a long time gap in between the flights. So now we are returning to Europe on the return ticket. Now I need to buy travel insurance for this second trip, but the dates will not be when I first bought my plane ticket. We are traveling by trains and plains around Europe and also taking a Med cruise in the middle of our Schengen stay. Finally, we take another cruise to get back to the states. In order to get the advantage of no pre-existing condition exclusion by buying the insurance within about 15 days of the date of first purchase, the date has to be a current date, not the date of my first payment for my first flight, which was months ago. Does that make sense? Should I put the date of the Med cruise and not cover the land part of our journey? Any other suggestions? Many thanks for reading this!
Go to insuremytrip.com and ask one of the agents, they should be able to help you.
Aside from the flight to Europe, I can't see why you can't insure the entire trip, if that's what you want to do. Are you looking at full coverage: cancellation, interruption, medical, and evacuation? I'm assuming you will be reserving accommodations for your arrival day in Europe? Make that your start date. Or maybe you are taking a separate flight on a separate ticket on arrival. Then make that your start date. I agree that an online chat or a call to an agent should fix you up quickly.
You need to check the small print. Most insurers expect the journey to start and finish in the country where the insurance was taken out.
And also that the insured is resident in the country where the insurance is taken out.
Thank you, all, for your replies. Hmm. All good info.
I recently went to Australia, but prior to departing the U.S. we were traveling for 2 weeks to visit family and friends. I departed for Australia from the city where my friend that I was traveling with lives. I was told that my travel insurance had to start the day I left my house, even though I was still in the States and didn’t need it yet.
