Free Lonely Planet Travel eBook from TPG

You do have to jump through a few hoops, but it takes very little time, and no commitment to anything. All you have to do is try out TPG’s CardMatch tool, which asks you some questions about your credit cards. It will then match you up with some, but there's no commitment to get any. In return, once you've gone through the process, they will email you a code that you can use on the Lonely Planet website for any Lonely Planet eBook in their entire catalog (you might want to give them a secondary email for this).

I did it yesterday—it took about 8-10 minutes and I now have the newest Norway Travel eBook. https://thepointsguy.com/cardmatch/ FYI, I think this ends on November 15, so you've got a bit of time.

Thanks for the tip! I'm shopping for new travel credit card so I was curious what it would tell me (surprisingly, not what I expected....need to research more). I got the Portugal guide (my next big trip) and was able to download both the PDF and Kindle versions so I can use it in multiple ways.

I'm also able to download the PDF and Kindle (Mobi) editions. Trying to open it on my phone or syncing it to my Kindle is a different story. This is what I found on the LP support. My guide does exceed the 200 MB, so when I have time, I will try the sideloading:

How to download to the Kindle app or Kindle device

You can download any PDF, ePub, or Mobi files and send them to your Kindle library.

Sign in to your Amazon account and send files from this link*:

https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle

After the file has been downloaded from that link (you can view the status directly on the Send to Kindle page), go to your Content and Devices section in your Amazon account and send it to your preferred reading device.

*Please note: The maximum file size to send via this method is 200 MB. Many of our books are larger than that, so "side-loading" may be a better option. When you click on the file, you will see if it is too large or not. You can also see sizes on your download link.

To complete the "side-load" download:

Download your preferred format on a desktop.
Connect your Kindle via USB to your desktop.
Copy and paste the downloaded eBook file to your Kindle Documents folder.
Once complete, be sure to choose the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" option before you unplug your device.

We are phasing out the mobi format, so most new titles will not offer this option.

Well, I just did this, and it worked. That said, it was very cumbersome, mainly because my book was over 200 MB, and so I had to use the side-load option.

I did mostly what the LP instructions said that Jules posted, but I'm putting in some additional clarification because it was a little confusing at times. Please note that I use a Mac, and I'm not sure what the procedures are for Windows.

To complete the "side-load" download:

Download your preferred format on a desktop I downloaded the MOBI format and saved it in a place I would remember.
Connect your Kindle via USB to your desktop.
Copy and paste the downloaded eBook file to your Kindle Documents folder.
This is the tricky part. To get to your Kindle Documents folder, which is a hidden folder, you have to open a new window in Finder. The easiest way to do that is to have Finder open on your desktop and then click Command+N. A new window within Finder should pop up.

Once that happens, click Command+Shift+G . Paste this path to the correct folder. (~/Library/Containers/com.amazon.Kindle/Data/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content/). Press Enter to open the folder directly.

Once you do this, open a new tab in Finder. You can do this by going to Action, right clicking, and there should be something that says Open a New Tab. Once you have that open, search for your downloaded MOBI file from Lonely Planet. Once you find it, right-click on it and then click Copy. After that, move back over to the Kindle library in the other tab and click PASTE anywhere in that folder.

Once complete, be sure to choose the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" option before you unplug your device.

For what it's worth, my Kindle was not showing up in Finder after I connected it with the USB. I'm not sure why, but when I opened the Kindle, it showed that it was connected, so all I had to do was click the disconnect button once the book was safely downloaded. After that, I then went to the Kindle app on my Mac, opened it up, and my Lonely Planet Norway book was in there. So it does work. Good luck!

Elizabeth sorry I didn't see your note until now, but Mardee and JulesM gave the instructions I followed. FWIW, my choice of guide was under 200 mb so it loaded via the instructions JulesM provided, but it did take about 20 minutes to process the file (slow day, I think). I've had to do the side load before and it works too.

Mardee,

Thanks for posting this. I got the England guide since that is where I'm headed next.
