We have seen a number of posts from people planning to spend months or more in Italy or other European country while working remotely. Usually they get reminded of the Schengen 90-day rule, and that is the end of it. But I am wondering how many people are aware of this Digital Nomad visa option?
Nice article. What if someone meets the non job qualifications but their actual work is self employed, managing their investments?
It was signed in March 2022 and I didn't know anything about it till today. Here is an important part from the article.
"If you qualify for that, you’ll also need to have an income of at least €28,000 ($30,000), a college degree or professional license, six years of work experience, and proof of health insurance and accommodation. Anyone who has been convicted of a crime in the last five years will be rejected."
Many countries have come up with the Digital Nomad route, most were developed during the pandemic, when remote work became popular.
It really is the best of all worlds for a country, you get a relatively high earning individual without having to "create" a job. They become resident, so now the country can tax their Foreign earned income. The individual adds to the economy (rent, groceries, shopping, other expenses), and ideally they are in a place they always wanted to live.
It gets a bit trickier with spouses, and not all companies allow workers to just work remotely from anywhere (they may have some tax obligations, plus security concerns, and the "work" could be viewed as an import/export) but overall, it is a good solution to a growing trend.
