On day 9 of a 25 day trip around Germany. On an ICE train today going 4+ hours from Dusseldorf to Berlin. All other travel has been on D-Ticket. I have saved well over the price so far on local trains, trams, u-bahns and busses.
Purchased on MVV app. Easy, they even sent a follow up email with link to cancel renewal. If you need to show ticket you can do so in the app. You do not need to be online once ticket is downloaded in the app.
If you can, take RE rather than RB trains. Fewer stops. Also, few local trains have wifi or power on board.
BTW, ICE is 4.5 hours and direct. Locals would have been 3 stops and 9+ hours before any DB delays. If cost is #1, D-Ticket is a great way to go.
