Travel In Bosnia

We will be spending three days in Sarajevo and two in Mostar before going to Split. It looks like the best way to get from Sarajevo to Mostar is by train, and there are only busses from Mostar to Split.

Does anyone have any recommendations or insights on the best modes of transportation?

After three nights in Split, we'll finish up our Balkan vacation is Zagreb, and it seems like the bus is a lot more efficient than the train to get there.

Thanks for any and all input!

Busses are really the only public transportation option in the region. It’s my understanding that train line to Mostar is a recent development, so might be really nice. Mostar and Split have their own small airports, so it’s possible you might find a Croatia Airline flight on a prop plane (I was investigating a bit and service was very limited.)

A more intriguing option might be a private tour transfer. Check out Funky Tours. They have a few “transfer tour” options that basically turns a long bus drive into a tour of sights in the countryside. Even their Mostar tour might be interesting for you: unlike other tours from Sarajevo, the itinerary takes you around the countryside before arriving in Mostar in the late afternoon. You could use that as your transport to Mostar and just stay there. That’s from their standard tour options, and I’m sure you could arrange something to Split for a price. Depending on the number of people in your party, it may be a good value. I thought their prices were pretty reasonable overall and they have a good rep.

I love Sarajevo. I will be back in September.

The Sarajevo to Mostar train looks interesting and convenient (https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/sarajevo-to-mostar-by-train.htm) but awrzesinski, is correct about private transfers in BiH. One of the advantages to travel in BiH, Montenegro, Albania, N. Macedonia is that you can either do a less expensive tour .... or, you can do a better tour for the same price. Whats better than a driver for the day? "Pull over here, I want a photo", "what is that", "have you been to .......", "lets stop for some road food"; its great.

I go into the area every year, this year I think twice (BiH once and Montenegro once). Despite that I still dont try and plan it alone. I call this lady: Dijana Krkotic, Doclea Travel, whatsapp/phone +382 69 277 749 [email protected] www.docleatravel.com

I turned over my May fishing trip (Montenegro) to her and so far she got me a better room at a better price on the coast. She set up the transfer from the airport to the fishing hotel in the mountains, which is a 3.5 hour trip but we have some stops planned along the way. For the trip back to the coast she found the perfect winery and olive orchard to visit.

The point is, if you want to see the places inbetween they are worth it in that part of the world and a driver makes it possible.

For grins I just checked Daytrip.com.

Sarajevo to Mostar is 114 euro for one, two or 3 people. Among the stock stops they can make are two great ones: Blagaj Tekija Monastery and Pocitelj and with those included the price goes up to 166 euro

Then Mostar to Split is 190 euro but with stops at Kravica Falls and Trogir its 242 euro. There were several other choices too.
