Hello! We are planning a trip to Croatia but plan to also visit Slovenia and Bosnia. Do we need special visas for overnights in these countries or is our US passport sufficient?
Hi! You do not need a visa if you are traveling on a US passport.
From the last quarter of 2026 onwards, you need to apply for an ETIAS to enter Slovenia and Croatia. See the official EU ETIAS website for updates https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias
Bosnia is not yet an EU-member and they’re not part of the Schengen zone. This means that you’ll have to go thru passport control if you travel from Croatia to Bosnia and back. If you do this by road, you’ll encounter 2 border controls. First, your passport will be checked and stamped when you exit Croatia, then you drive about a mile before you will need to pass thru the Bosnian border control. Should you want to go back to Croatia, you’ll do the same but in reverse.
