Secure Parking in Sarajevo

I just noticed in my Rick Steves travel guide that Rick says "It's important to find secure parking in Sarajevo."

Our apartment provides a parking spot down the street a bit and not under any surveillance.

So my question is, what is meant by "secure parking"? Is there a great risk of a small Fiat Panda style rental car being stolen or vandalized in Sarajevo? Or might that simply mean we should find "secure parking" so we don't get ticketed or towed?

We won't be leaving any personal items in the car overnight.

Well, having been twice, riding with other local drivers, I cannot imagine driving there myself. (Once out of the city is much better.) I have no idea what Rick meant, but my thought is that you need a guaranteed parking space - not hoping for on-street parking. My guess is that as long as your apartment is providing this, it should be ok.

TexasTravelMom, you drive in Europe a lot so that says a lot. Me, never. Especially in the Balkans. First, the roads are unpredictable, Second, its beautiful there and I want to look at the scenery and not the road, Third, they march to their own drummers and I dont want to find myself in a situation I dont understand, Fourth, I avoid all stress possible when on holiday, Fifth, I am a really bad driver.

When I go to Sarajevo for my fishing trips I hire a driver for the 3.5 hour drive from Sarajevo to the area where the fishing hotel is located. I dont remember what I paid last May, seems to me the round trip was 200 euro and I probably could have done better if I had called Dijana.

For the parking. I would suspect that petty crime is high in Sarajevo, but again, you have insurance.
