Sarajevo comments

We spent about 5 days in Sarajevo in September 2026 and it is a magnificent and unforgettable place to visit. We stayed at Hotel Old Town, where the staff were amazing (not only did they help with restaurant choices and reservations, but my husband asked for ice our first day, and they said they didn't have an ice machine, then literally went out to a café and brought a glass of ice to our room!) It was right in the middle of everything but surprisingly quiet. Rick recommends the Siege Tour with Funky Tours and I would really say to book that before you do anything else; driving around the city with someone who lived through the war, seeing places rooted in their memories, learning more about the history of the place, and talking about life and conflict and political polarization was absolutely amazing. We also took a general walking tour that was a bit superficial but helped us decide where to come back to. The city is full of beauty in so many ways.

The tram worked well for us getting out to the National Museum (there's basically only one line) and I had a lovely lunch on the rooftop of the Crvena jabuka gastro market across the street (sort of like Whole Foods, just buy some lunch, carry your basket up to the roof and join all the locals.) We also enjoyed the Olympic Museum and a great coffee at Kawa nearly adjacent to it down the hill. Oh, and can't forget to mention Tito's Iron Fist Socialist Laundry! Great conversation with the expat American who runs the place, and he delivered to our hotel for only a little extra.

I would really encourage anybody who is interested to consider traveling to Sarajevo (and Mostar which we also did.) Cameron's videos and essays helped me prepare, as did Rick's book of course.

BethM;

It takes courage to go beyond the ordinary and explore places like BiH. The BiH forum probably averages 1 post a month and you can count the trip reports in the last couple of years on your fingers. Now you know what everyone is missing.

I go fishing in BiH most years and so end up spending a night or two in Sarajevo on the way into the country and on the way out of the country. It is an absolute pleasure being in Sarajevo.

Of the three hotels I have stayed at, the Hotel Old Town is my favorite, so we share that and for the same reasons. Once the manager helped me break into locked luggage. It was mine but he was still a bit nervous … his expression was, “is it really his or am I going to jail with him”. Spent a lot of time in the little bar across the street.

Like most in the Balkans I found them to be good people.

You aren't going to get much response with trip reports to places such as Sarajevo or BiH. Just the nature of this forum.

BUT what I have discovered is that for everyone that posts here there are three more that read and don’t post. That’s evident by the PM's I get. Apparently the most adventurous souls fly under the radar.

So don’t be discouraged and post those trip reports as it will help people; me included. These are places that you can go to 100 times and still learn new stuff, and I am eager to learn.

Beth, thanks for the trip report! Sarajevo sounds really fascinating. That area's been on my radar for a long time, and one of these days I intend to get there. It's nice to have a good hotel recommendation too.

It sounds like you and your husband had a really lovely time there. And I love the name Tito's Iron Fist Socialist Laundry! 😂

I’ve been to Sarajevo twice and agree that it is a fascinating place! And I totally agree with your comment about touring the places in the city with a guide who has lived through the siege. I took my tour with Tour Mage, but I know Dave took one with Funky Tours. I took a different Funky Tours day tour, but had several with Tour Mage.

I haven’t made it to the Olympic Museum yet - maybe next time.

Thanks for bringing back great memories!

My first trip to Sarajevo i used a company called MeetBosnia.. I just googled, they are still in business. I think one of the largest in town and the guide was excellent. The old guy would stop and point to the hill and say he was standing exactly where I was when the man next to him was killed by a sniper ... rather unsettling ... and based on the detail of his stories and the wet eyes, I believed him.

I first went to Sarajevo for the strangest of reasons. U2 and Luciano Pavarotti. Wise move.

Later trips I used Dijana Krkotic, Doclea Travel

I suspect I will return in the Spring.

Oh and an unexpected realization. The two folks in the region that I can, and do, talk politics with have a much less than negative view of Tito. This is what travel is about for me ... learning.
