I am planning to go from Mostar to Sarajevo (apparently 2-3 hours based on Google maps) and then from Sarajevo to Kotor in Montenegro. Looks like the road from Sarajevo to Kotor is long and probably windy. Google estimates around 5 hours just driving.
I don't like to drive so long and wondering, what is the best place to stay overnight and enjoy some scenery to break the trip into two parts? Which road is in better condition? I am not a fan of super twisty small roads. Thanks
You are going to the wrong countries if you don’t like narrow twisty roads. They are driveable, but you will be going through mountainous country and the roads are one lane each direction with no shoulder. I have driven some of them and they are perfectly doable but not a walk in the park. However, it is gorgeous and interesting, so I applaud you for taking the time!
Thoughts:
1. Take the road that goes past Piva Canyon and stop in Pluzine. It’s about halfway. I stayed a few miles off the road about 30 min past Pluzine in a cabin at Etno Village Izlazak but there are hotels in Pluzine - and a really great restaurant Zvono Jazz. Piva Monastery is small but very interesting. On your second day stop at Ostrog Monastery (but warning, winding road and lots of stairs) followed by Restaurant Sokoline for lunch.

2. Take Mr. É’s suggestion of contacting Dijana Krkotic, [email protected] , for drivers between your cities in this area. She can arrange a driver Croatia to Mostar (with stops as designated), Mostar to Sarajevo (with stops), and Sarajevo to Kotor. You do not need a car in Mostar or Sarajevo - and the driver will stop wherever you want in between. So compare pricing for drivers to the cost of a rental car for a week that you don’t need. If you want a car in Kotor, you can rent one for a day (she can arrange that also). After Kotor, I have not done it but acraven has (and maybe others) but I think there is a bus that goes Kotor to Dubrovnik, if you don’t want another driver.
I would stay the MB Tara Motel (really a hotel. very nice actually. ive stayed twice over the years). Great views of the deepest canyon in Europe. If you have time, fish it, zipline it, raft it, explore it, hike it. If no time its worth the stop for the views alone. Hotel: https://mbturist.com/en/motel-tara-mb The view from the deck is spectacular. That is close to half way to Kotor (but I would stay in Perast which you will drive through before reaching Kotor. And as TexasTravelMom suggested stop for lunch at the Restaurant Sokoline for the second greates view in Montenegro: https://youtu.be/miNV1FVK7qI?si=Gj0sXsIvSpgzmI14

Of course this turns your one 5 hour straight thru drive to two 4 hours drives. But given a choice between Croatia or Montenegro, I would choose Montenegro every time.
Thanks @TexasTravelMom and @Mr É...............(Пан E ►).
I will follow your suggestions there. I would drive myself, its part of the fan. I am feeling ok on mountainous roads hopefully they have some kind of barriers :). Sometimes google maps sent me on some country roads, in bad conditions, sometimes not even paved, that I try to avoid. I was just worried about long drive in the mountains.
