One novel that is not on either list is Morvern Callar. It is a bit bleak, but a good read; does a good job of suggesting what life is like for (at least some) young, less privileged persons in those beautiful highland areas. What led me to it is the name "Morvern", which is also the name of the peninsula just NE of Mull. Wife and I drove through it to get to a small ferry to Mull, and the scenery made a permanent impression.

I can attest to the allure of Amy Liptrot's The Outrun. I picked it up in Edinburgh in August 2016 after reading about it in some Fringe review.

But I think the writer misses a huge element -- any of the works of George Mackay Brown, or even the biography of him by Maggie Fergusson. Mackay Brown WAS Orkney. His poetry and prose not to be missed for those visiting the islands in real life or via armchair.
