The History of Lithuania

I know that some travellers want to read about the history of the Baltic States and Lithuania, but the material on the subject in English is not very widely available. I found one source to share.

In the second half of 2013, Lithuania took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the very first time.The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (URM) realized they lacked a modern, concise, and objective book written in foreign languages that could quickly introduce outsiders to Lithuania’s complex past.To fix this, the Ministry commissioned a special project. They brought together four of Lithuania's most prominent and well-known historians, each specializing in a different era. The book that was created by them is "The History of Lithuania". The book was published by Vilnius University Press.

Stephanie Zimmermann, a Chicago Sun-Times journalist, recently did an excellent six-part series about Lithuania.

For Zimmermann, the series is personal as her ancestry is from Lithuania. The Chicago newspaper agreed to the series in part because the Midwest metropolis has a long history of Lithuanian immigration. Former Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus spent half his life in Chicago before going home to serve his country.

Thank you for these links - we are going to the Baltics next spring and it's been a bit of a challenge finding historical information about those countries, including Lithuania.

Thanks for sharing this, sounds like a really useful resource for anyone wanting a solid overview before visiting. Four specialists covering different eras is a nice way to get a well-rounded picture rather than one person's take on the whole sweep of history. Will check it out before my own trip, appreciate you posting the link.
