Happy 185th Birthday to Claude Monet!

Monet was born on this day in 1840 in Paris.

In an interview in 1900 he credited two years in Algeria for giving him an appreciation of light and color that was just as important to his work as his time in Paris. Note that he also spent a lot of time on the west end of the railroad line past Giverny, in Le Havre.

If you're doing the day trip from Paris to Giverny why not turn it into a couple days and include Rouen, or a few days and include Le Havre?

Happy birthday to him! My husband and I stumbled upon his statue in Rouen last month.

Close to La Harve is the seaside village of Sainte-Adresse where Monet did some painting.

Monet was the gateway to my children's lifelong interest in art. A good book for children is https://www.amazon.com/Linnea-Monets-Garden-Cristina-Bjork/dp/9129583144

It’s hard to realize how radical Monet and those pioneering impressionists seemed in their day. I love his work, especially his series paintings…..the haystacks, the poplars and all those cathedral paintings. And the water lilies, sigh. So beautiful.
