Happy 150th Birthday to Peleș Castle, Romania's summer palace

In August 1875 construction began on Peleș Castle outside Sinaia, when King Carol I realized that King Ludwig's wacky nostalgic getaway Neuschwanstein could be beat using the same tactic of a faux medieval exterior with a modern steel and concrete frame, only better -- Carol's imaginary marker of Romania's ancient [fictional] sovereignty had central heating, vacuum, and electricity; Neuschwanstein had a telephone line to the post office, big whoop, right?

Check out the series "World's Greatest Palaces" on the streamer of your choice, S1Ep8 is about the castle, and gives a nice thumbnail of Romania's history, including interviews with the current HRH. It's fun to listen to the curators explaining the building in Romanian, (subtitles in English) which sounds a lot like provencal or some kind of hybrid Italian. Makes one imagine what Europe might be like today if romance cultures/peoples had made further inroads into central and eastern Europe. A person can dream, can't he?

HRH glides over the awkward bits of recent Romanian history with a smooth diplomatic version of "It is what it is, amirite?" and quickly moves on to how his castle was using alternate energy through hydropower long before it was cool. Those Austrian-built generators are still running today.

Some nifty things you might learn -- Sec'y of State Henry Kissinger and Pres Gerald Ford had a state visit at the castle in 1975, rather than in Bucharest, where they got ahead of the game by negotiating most favored nation status almost fifteen years before We The Good Guys won the Cold War. 'Merica!!

some kind of hybrid Italian

I agree, it sounds enough like Italian that sometimes I think I can understand a little of it.

Romanian had its original basis in Latin, but then was heavily influenced by influx of Slavic peoples. Some words like for counting, colors, and naming streets are very familiar to anyone who speaks Spanish. The rest, not so much….

I enjoyed my recent visit to Peles Castle. I didn’t feel the video could really give a sense of the amazing planning and detail that went into each room.

Those of you with trips to Romania coming up will want to read the short article in the 21 August issue of

The New York Review of Books.

Romania’s Split Identity
Romania’s divided loyalties between East and West help explain how a nerdy Sorbonne-educated mathematician was elected president.

https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2025/08/21/romanias-split-identity-costica-bradatan/

Among the lines that caught my eye is the description of Bucharest as a jumbled mix of architectural styles, which came up in our recent travel club discussions.

Interesting, as far as I was able to read without a subscription. Not far enough, though, to know how the book explains "how a nerdy Sorbonne-educated mathematician was elected president."

In the abbreviated version of the review that I was able to read, I did wonder how the author could have commented on "writing of startling beauty, much of which is lost even in the best translations" - that is, until I noticed that the article was written by a Professor of Humanities in the Honors College at Texas Tech University named Costică Brădăţan.

Maybe my library has the publication with the article, though I doubt it has the actual book.

I found a longish preview of the book itself:

I thought you were going to talk about Pele of football fame.

Watched the Women's Rugby World Cup last night (won't spoil the score for you) so footy was on the mind...
