Happy 150th Birthday to Peleș Castle, Romania's summer palace

In August 1875 construction began on Peleș Castle outside Sinaia, when King Carol I realized that King Ludwig's wacky nostalgic getaway Neuschwanstein could be beat using the same tactic of a faux medieval exterior with a modern steel and concrete frame, only better -- Carol's imaginary marker of Romania's ancient [fictional] sovereignty had central heating, vacuum, and electricity; Neuschwanstein had a telephone line to the post office, big whoop, right?

Check out the series "World's Greatest Palaces" on the streamer of your choice, S1Ep8 is about the castle, and gives a nice thumbnail of Romania's history, including interviews with the current HRH. It's fun to listen to the curators explaining the building in Romanian, (subtitles in English) which sounds a lot like provencal or some kind of hybrid Italian. Makes one imagine what Europe might be like today if romance cultures/peoples had made further inroads into central and eastern Europe. A person can dream, can't he?

HRH glides over the awkward bits of recent Romanian history with a smooth diplomatic version of "It is what it is, amirite?" and quickly moves on to how his castle was using alternate energy through hydropower long before it was cool. Those Austrian-built generators are still running today.

Some nifty things you might learn -- Sec'y of State Henry Kissinger and Pres Gerald Ford had a state visit at the castle in 1975, rather than in Bucharest, where they got ahead of the game by negotiating most favored nation status almost fifteen years before We The Good Guys won the Cold War. 'Merica!!

some kind of hybrid Italian

I agree, it sounds enough like Italian that sometimes I think I can understand a little of it.
