For anyone interested in museums, historic sites, castles, etc. in Europe, I highly recommend Michael Finkel's new one: The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession. This is a classic piece of nonfiction where you keep saying "this is too crazy to be true," and yet it is. Ironically, reading it also gives you a great list of small museums to visit across France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, etc. Enjoy!
Thanks History Traveler. I just placed a hold on it at a local library. It will be a while.
Thanks for the recommendation! Looks great!
Thank you for bringing this book to our attention. I just ordered a copy from my local public library.
Thanks for this - I already had it on my list, but it helps to have an actual recommendation from another museum lover!
Thanks for the rec! Just ordered.
Great recommendation--I kept reading this book and thinking, "Should it have been shelved in the fiction section? It cannot possibly be true!" The protagonist was so audacious, it almost made me want to try to replicate his M.O. in various small museums in Europe...
Thank you. It looks like my next read. One question - are there many illustrations? if so, are they in color? (My Kindle is B/W).
The chapters are not illustrated, but there's a collection of color photos at the end of about 10-12 of the artworks discussed.
Perfect! I was just looking for something new (& not dull) to read about European art, & it's at my local library.... Thanks.
Right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation.
