Going to Venice

Anyone who wants to see what Venice is like or going to Venice should watch Summertime with Katherine Hepburn. It is a really nice movie, simple, but the whole movie takes place in Venice and the scenery is great. Well worth watching just to see scene after scene of the city of Venice including boat rides, canals and bridges. You feel like your in Venice!

That sounds great and I have to say I'm not familiar with this movie. Did you see it on Netflix or catch it on one of the classic movie channels or ??

Great movie. I love "Roman Holiday" for Roma.

Notice how few tourists are in these movies from the 1950s.

Its fun to watch "Summertime" and note how everything looks the same. We recognized several places we saw when we were there. I think you can catch it on Turner Classic Movies every now and then.

I love this movie so much I bought the DVD. Even though it was filmed in the 50's, it's the best visual introduction to Venice I've ever seen, like a travelogue with a story. It's what made me dream of going there someday and I must say that, even though it's a bit different now, it was everything I thought it would be based on this movie - only with more tourist crowds, especially in Plaza San Marco.

EDIT: Except that I never found a Renato di Rossi for myself.

I am going to Venice on a RS tour this October. I am reading Venice: A New History by Thomas F. Madden, a very engaging and fascinating book about Venice from the time of the fall of the Roman Empire. It is well written, not dry, and by a historian who writes for the layman. Really enjoying it!

Thank you Judy for telling me about the book. Always looking for something good to read. I would love to read this book as it is set in Venice. You will enjoy the tour, are you going on the 10 day Italy tour? All three cities are really interesting and fun. Have a safe, fun trip!

Ann,
I am going on the Best of Italy in 17 Days tour. I will fly into Milan 2 days early and then take the train to Varenna where the tour begins. I'm very excited.
I'm going to find Summertime at my library, I would love to see Venice in the background the way it looked in the 50's.
Best,
