Check out these Scottish TV shows and film

I've been watching as much Scottish TV and movies that I can in preparation for my first RS tour and trip to Scotland. If you subscribe to Acorn TV, try the new Loch Ness mystery series. It's only 6 episodes; a new one is added each Monday. Wonderful scenery and a compelling story. Also on Acorn - a series from 20 years ago called Hamish MacBeth. MacBeth is the only constable in a small town. It's a quirky show, but also poignant in places.

Not on Acorn, but look for the movie Stone of Destiny from about 10 years ago. I found it in my local library. It's based on the true story of Scottish students who stole the Stone of Scone/Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abby in the 1950's in the name of Scottish nationalism.
Netflix has Shetland, another mystery series produced by BBC Scotland. This one is so good I've already watched all the episodes twice. Absolutely love actor Douglas Henshall in this!

I love the Scottish brogue and feel like I'll be able to understand it much better after watching all these shows.

If anyone has other suggestions for Scottish shows or films that aren't in the Rick Steves book, let me know!

Love Shetland.... My ancestors came from there and still have cousins that live there. I went in 2010. Such beautiful place.

Trainspotting. If you can understand every word without subtitles then consider yourself well prepared.

Three movies by director Bill Forsyth: Gregory's Girl, a coming of age story filmed around Glasgow. Local Hero, set in the Highlands a quirky story about the oil business Invading Scotland. Burt Lancaster is superb as the owner of an oil company as is Peter Reigart as an OC employee and a great cast of Scottish actors. Shot in the Highlands the photography is also superb. Comfort and Joy, set in Glasgow, a radio personality intervenes in ice cream war between members of a Scots/Italian family.

TV show Monarch of the Glen about a family trying to keep their family home, a castle, out of the hands of the bank.

Field of Blood is on Amazon. Typical cop thriller. I only watched one or two episodes. I might have stuck with it more if I was going to Scotland : ).

Not sure if it's on Rick's list, but I recommend Monarch of the Glen, especially the first few seasons. Great cast, endearing characters, really fun and easy to watch. Enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I've watched most of Monarch on the Glen and liked it, but got tired of it toward the end of the series. JC and Lesley, my library has Trainspotting, Gregory's Girl, and Local Hero, so I'll be watching those next. Vandrabrud, will check out the one on Amazon as well, hopefully it's on Prime. Appreciate the help.

Look for Peter May's mysteries set in the Hebrides, The Black House, Chessmen, Coffin Road, and one other whose name I forget but I think it could be Lewis Man. Great sense of place at atmosphere if somewhat dark.
