Thanks for the link - my TNY subscription is lapsed for the season, so I would have missed this article if you hadn't posted.
Note that Casanova's lottery scheme and some of his gambling descriptions did in fact become important for the early development of economics and statistics as disciplines. Too little attention is often typical when it comes to how much energy Europeans would spend on gambling!
