Ancient Treasures with Bettany Hughes- documentaries

Posted by DianeSLA (US) on 10/17/26 05:14 AM

Bettany is an English historian specializing in classical ancient history. We watch her on BBC dcumentaries, subscription needed.

We are thoroughly enjoying her multi-part series 1-5 where she visits counties in Eastern Europe and brings to life ancient history interwoven with more current history. Her Series 3 segments Estonia and Bulgaria were especially astonishing to us as we knew so little about the countries or their cultures. . https://www.bbcselect.com/watch/ancient-treasures/

If you are a traveler who is interested in the history of the places you visit and are visiting Eastern Europe you might enjoy watching Bettany.

She has a number of similar programs including the Greece and the Islands, a cruise down the Nile in an Egyptian houseboat, Eastern Europe/Silk Road.. Not my favourite presenter but lots of times she visits countries off the tourist routes. She also done various programmes on UK sites. Her programmes are shown on PBS in North America.

She goes to a lot of interesting places. My concern is that her programs are so much about Bettany this Bettany that rather than focussing on where she is. Very much like an internet "influencer" so I've given up watching her...

I used to watch and enjoy her documentaries on BritBox, but now you have to be premium to see them. That makes me very miffed.
