Anybody get the the yellow fever vaccine before and remember what the price was? I was reading online they can be as low as $150. I live in metro Atlanta and the cheapest I could find is $250. One place even wanted to charge $475.
Wish I could help ya on the cost - the couple times I've gotten em (once when I was too young to even remember, and once as an adult), they were administered by the government.
Might your insurance help with cost? Maybe as preventative treatment, to at least chip away at some of the expense?
That's one I've never gotten, but for Hep A/B my doctor recommended I check the price at CVS, and it was definitely lower than what her office was going to charge. I don't know whether the major pharmacy chains administer the yellow fever vaccine, but it would be worth calling places like CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and others that might be in your area.
I don’t believe my insurance does, since it’s considered an “elective” vaccine considering you don’t need them living in the US.
Our Public Health Department ordered it in for my trip in 2011 but I don't remember the cost. It was definitely less than what my primary would have charged though.
I'm pretty sure I got that vaccine a few years ago before we travelled to Africa. I went to Emory's travel clinic near St. Joseph's, and I vaguely remember getting the entire bundle of vaccines for about $350. Have you checked there?
I paid $160 for that vaccination in 2016. I live in New England. A sticker shocker was the cost for preventative rabies vaccination for a safari trip to Africa. Unfortunately I cannot identify the cost entry on my expense ledger but it may have been about $900.
This is slightly off topic, but my insurance company paid the entire cost for me to get the vaccines for Hep A and B. They are now part of the routine vaccination series for children and it would be advisable to have them even if you never leave this country because there have been outbreaks of the food-borne one (I think it's A) among restaurant workers within the US. The shots will cost the insurance company a lot less than the hospital bills if you get sick.
The ones I took were administered by the government too. Got one every year for 4 years if I remember correctly along with whatever I needed for malaria and cholera. A quick online check showed a wide range of prices similar to what you found. If you’re going for work, your employer should pick up the cost.
I checked with CVS, Walgreens, and Publix to no luck. Left a message with the local health department weeks ago and haven’t heard back. Ruth, I did call that Emory and they no longer offer vaccines accordingly to the receptionist. Waiting to hear back from 2 other places. I’m fine with paying the $250. Was just interesting seeing the average price online showed less than $200. Must be inflation hitting yellow fever jabs too lol.
We paid $280 for ours in 2019 prior to our safari. We had to pay for our yellow fever vaccine out of pocket (others were covered by our insurance). We did go through a travel clinic affiliated with the hospitals/network/insurance and I would not hesitate to use them again. They were fabulous and knew exactly what we needed based on where we were going. Do you have a like type thing in?
Mine was about $150 several years ago. The only place I could get it was the travel clinic at my local health dept.
We got ours at the local county health department about 11 years ago, it cost almost $150.
You can search for vaccine locations by state on the CDC website - here is the list for Georgia https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/yellow-fever-vaccination-clinics/state/georgia
I got mine in 2017 and my health insurance paid for some of it but it was subject to my standard out of pocket deductible. It was in the $250 range as I recall, but I also had to pay for the office visit and other vaccines at the same time. On the up side, yellow fever is now considered a lifetime vaccine so you only need one jab.
Just booked an appointment for $222. Checked with about 15-20 different places nearby. Used that CDC locator when calling around. Thanks for the tips everyone!
