Would appreciate any help anyone can give us. We have friends who live in walled/gated communities near Centro Historico but they are unavailable to us for advice during the period we need it (like now). It feels difficult to pin down a place but safety is a concern and something gated would work for us.
Anyone have any first hand experience with a specific community within Queretaro that is within walking distance of Centro?

We used to "winter over" in San Miguel de Allende every year and always made it a point to spend several days each trip in Queretaro. Because we were there for only a few days we opted to stay in hotels near the Centro. Safety was never a concern - we always felt secure walking around in the early evening.
For our extended stays in SMA (up to 3 months at a time) we had good luck finding rental properties on both VRBO or AirBnB. Am guessing they cover Queretaro pretty well too ... or will at least get you started looking at neighborhoods.
Though being within walking distance of the Centro would be ideal, we found local taxi's to be a cheap, reliable, and safe way to get around.
Also FWIW, for getting around the region for day trips and more extended excursions you really can't beat the local buses. We relied on Primera Plus for our own trips, though there are others equally handy (and cheap).
Another random thought: though you won't particularly need to include A/C during winter visits, June will be another matter. I'd suggest including A/C in your search criteria during the summer months.
