Where to spend New Year’s Eve?! Doing an Asia/Europe trip

Hi all!

I am booking my flights for next month (yeah im a late planner) and I will be visiting Reykjavik, London, Budapest, Singapore, Hong Kong, maybe Tokyo, and Taipei.

I don’t care which order I do it in, but im wondering where would be the best place to end my trip (which would be on New Year’s Eve). Either I start in Asia (for example Taipei) and end in Europe (ie Reykjavik) or vice versa.

I went to Reykjavik last year during Christmas time and LOVED it. However I never got to see NYE and I’ve heard it’s one of the best places to see it.

However, I will also have friends in Taipei to watch the fireworks with so im unsure which one to choose.

I’m also open to HK, Singapore, Tokyo, or any of the places I mentioned for NYE but most likely debating between spending it in Taipei or Reykjavik.

Anyone can help comment?

How long is your trip? There is a lot of travel with your plan.

Where are you flying out on the start of your trip?

I have been to all the places you listed and enjoyed them all. Not sure that NYE in East Asia is that huge an event?

I would rate London as a great place for NYE. but you seem to have only two choices, Taipei or Reykjavik. Between the two, i say Reykjavik.

Your Asian cities will be much warmer than those in Europe. Singapore was a very pleasant country, we did five nights there in 2015.
Also, love London and Budapest.

My trip is 25 days not counting flights.

One idea is

14 days across Hong Kong and Taiwan and 11 days spread across Europe.

I know it’s probably more ideal to just pick one continent but I don’t get tired from flying. Benefit of being in my 20s. I’ve done tons of trips like this before.

I’m only set on HK/Taipei, all the destinations in Europe are fluid for me except for Reykjavik because I LOVED Iceland during the winter time. It’s so peaceful. I’m also considering replacing Budapest with Lisbon, but not sure. Or replacing it with a Christmas market city.

One idea I had was

Reykjavik for 3 days, just sky lagoon and northern lights (I’ve been there before), London for 4 days, Budapest for 4 days, fly to Hong Kong. Spend 3 days there. Spend the rest of my trip exploring Taiwan. Or cut out London and replace with Singapore. There’s a lot of flexibility with my plans. Perks of traveling solo.

I am finalizing my plans and how much time to devote. I may also decide to cut out London and just do Budapest and a closer city.

Hi there, sounds like a fun, varied trip! Just checking if you're a big city person, though you recall how peaceful Iceland was in the wintertime?

After living in Asia Pacific for 19 years and multiple trips to Taiwan, the one thing I think you might look at more closely is how long you spend in Taiwan. It's just not a place to spend 14 days, especially in December! We've done numerous spring and autumn hikes there, but from the sounds of it, you're seeing this more as a Winter Wonderland trip with visits to see friends? Tokyo (and further afield), Hong Kong & Singapore, (from your list) are all more interesting. Taiwan will be colder than SE Asia, and Taipei is very crowded. Their big festival is Chinese NY, rather than December 31st / NYE. I would spend NYE somewhere that celebrates that date, so Iceland & the UK would both bit your preferences. Sounds like a great trip!

Sounds like an exciting trip! It involves a lot of flying and this may exhaust you.

Singapore is on the equator and therefore is hot and humid throughout the entire year (no seasonality at all). If you hate muggy weather, cut it out. Tokyo is a must-go, but you will need to reserve enough time for it and the rest of Japan. Hong Kong is not worth more than 2-3 days. Taipei is less exciting than the above mentioned cities, but the street food scene is great.
