Where should we visit in Morocco and good side trip

Hi.
We're looking at taking a tour of Morocco and wonder what are the sites we should not miss if we love archaeology. Also, since we're traveling so far, is there another country we should visit on this trip? We've been to Egypt and Turkey and loved them. Thank you!

Depending on how much time you have, consider all/any of the following:

  • Fes
  • Marrakech
  • Aït Benhaddou
  • Todra Gorge
  • Essaouira
  • Meknes
  • The Grand Ergs (sand seas - edge of the Sahara) to the south of the Atlas Mountains

Fes is definitely my top place to visit. If you love archaeology, definitely check out Volubulis (ancient Roman site). If you want to visit another country, it's very easy to get the ferry across to Spain and seeing the Moorish sites in Andalucia makes a nice combination with visiting sites in Morocco. If you don't mind flying, Tunisia is also a great country to visit and has a lot of impressive archeological sites just outside Tunis (as well as further afield).

For archaeology, you probably want Volubilis. We didn't go there on our recent trip, but its supposed to be very nice.

We would go back to any of the places we visited in September: Chefchaouen, Fes, 3-day-desert-tour-to Marrakech. The 3-day tour was provided by Morocco Fabulous Travel and included barbary apes; camel ride to desert; overnights in desert tent (Erg Chebbi) and Dades Gorge; Ait Benhaddou; and stops at women's cooperatives where they sell clothes, souvenirs, argan oil and rose oil.

The only other country that links well with Morocco is Spain. Unless you're flying, in which case you can go anywhere.
