We have planned to take a RoadScholar tour of Morocco from Mar 9-26 (2024). However, we would like to follow it with a couple of weeks someplace else like Portugal or Greece and it appears that early April will be cold in those places. We could switch to Morocco April 13-30 and then Portugal in early May. We selected the March tour because we read that there would be flowers in bloom. Thoughts? Advice?
You may want to rethink the March dates. Research religious observances for Morocco during that period and its potential impact on your travel. It’s not a negative but you may experience inconveniences. Our Moroccan tour guide recommended that we travel before or after this holiday in order for us and him to fully enjoy the people and the country.
To be clearer: Ramadan 2024 starts on March 10 and lasts for 4 weeks or so. It is usually not a good time to visit Muslim-majority countries because it can make it difficult to find food during the day (although Morocco is not the strictest in that regard), and because it does make people tired after a while. I'd much rather visit on the April dates!
I lived in Saudi Arabia for five years and DEFINITELY advise against visiting a Muslim country during ramadan.
Muslims can't drink or eat during daylight hours. Many shops have shorter hours and people slow down as well.
Thank you very much.
