I'd like advice about proper attire and etiquette when visiting the temples in Vietnam. I understand that does are not acceptable, but are slacks oK for women, or are skirts considered more appropriate? Sleeves?
Slacks are fine. I don’t recall seeing anyone in a skirt but I would think if your knees are covered it’s ok. There was no one policing attire there.
I don't remember if dress codes were strictly enforced in the few temples I visited in Vietnam. To be respectful, you should have your upper arms and knees covered. Wear shoes that are easy to take off and put on. Locals generally wear short sleeves in hot weather, men and most women in slacks, though some women wear skirts - definitely below the knee.
I also don't recall a dress code being enforced, but I visited temples wearing capris and short sleeved (but not sleeveless) shirts and was not turned away. Nothing too revealing and you should be fine. In Thailand the dress code was more strictly enforced, but at those temples you could rent a sarong if they felt you were inappropriately attired.
Thanks for the advice. That is pretty much what my thoughts were, but it is reassuring to hear from those who have been there.
Make sure you wear slip-on shoes so they are easy to take on and off!
