Visa Requirements for Australia and New Zealand

I've never traveled to a country where we need a visa.

We are US citizens. We will fly LA to Sydney and then immediately head to NZ. We will spend 3 weeks in NZ, then head to Australia for 3 weeks and back to the States. I think all we need for NZ is the NZeTA. But I'm hazy on what we need for Australia. Do we need both a visa and an ETA?

Thanks travel warriors for your help!

Technically the ETAs (Electronic Travel Authority) are not visas, although they are colloquially referred to as such. You need to have the ETA as a visitor from a non-exempt country, and in addition to the ETA you’ll be granted a “free” Visitor Visa upon arrival.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).
* As part of the NZeTA application, you will also pay for the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy).
* The NZeTA costs NZD $17 on the free app, or NZD $23 if completed online.
* The IVL is currently NZD $35, but this week the NZ Government announced it will go up on October 1, 2024 to NZD $100.
* Apply by September 29 if you plan to travel to NZ in the next 2 years and want to save NZD $65.
* The NZeTA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue for as many return visits as you like!
* At the latest you should apply at least 72 hours before you travel to New Zealand.
* Full application details for both the NZeTA and the IVL can be found at:
* https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority)
* Usually processed within 3 business days.
* Can take longer if there are any mistakes on the application.
* Valid for 12 months from date of issue.
* $20AUD service charge.
