Visa for US citizens to visit India

We visited India in 2015 and had to go through a terrible visa process. We are looking to do a tour of India in Winter of 2025-6.
Currently, according to the US State Department there is an e-visa process for tourists so we may not have to do the full visa process again.

Does anyone have recent experience with visiting India regarding what is required for US Citizens?

Some friends of mine went late last year (or this year maybe?), so I texted them. They said that they got their eVisa online at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html.

You just upload your photo and passport, pay the fee online, and will get the ETA by email. You then print it out and show it at immigration. They will then stamp the eVisa in your passport.

Caution:

There are many third party sites (not indian) with official sounding name/description but are scam.
I always begin with embassy of India website and click on evisa link there

It is extremely easy straightforward process now Cheap too.

If you are having problems it could be server issue Just try next day during US late evening hours

I traveled to India in 2024 and got the one year e-visa online. I filled out the online application, uploaded a photo and passport photo page, made payment, and within 48 hours I received the Visa via email. Get the one year, not the thirty day, there were individuals who had issues with their 30 day visa and travel dates not aligning properly and the airline would not allow them to fly.

I I just applied for the Indian e-visa yesterday, and received it today. Be sure to use the official website, not a third party site. It was pretty straightforward as long as you carefully follow the directions. You can apply for a 30-day, one-year or five-year visa. I chose the five-year because, who knows? Maybe I will have the chance to return! The cost was reasonable ($80 for the five-year).
