We just came back two weeks ago and I have been there countless times.
Have you been before?

The islands were ravaged a few years ago with cat 5 hurricanes. The local areas are still recovering.

The island consists of two ends. The north end and the south end. You fly into the south end. The Baths are on the south end. The major food shopping is on the south end. The north end is close to the smaller out islands and/or resorts, like Saba Rock, Bitter End, a few others. Exploring this area, to us was really worth it - there are free water taxies to the majors.
Choosing an end to stay on to me has to do with how comfortable you are with the driving conditions. We did not feel safe or capable of driving any distance after dark. The roads are "fun" during the day, but treacherous at night (narrow, steep, no road signs, huge pot holes and speed bumps, so so many switchbacks, and no lights). Thus to us, staying in the north end allows access to the better dinning options for dinner ( Saba Rock and Bitter End, ets) without driving more than a few blocks. During the day we were more than happy to drive and explore the many beaches.

The Baths are a MUST do. Be sure to research when the large cruise ships are in port and DO NOT go on those days - thank me later.

We stayed at Leverick Bay resort, which I was not over the moon with however, I would not miss Leverick Bays' Friday night BBQ (good vibe, entertainment, great food - reservation needed). They also have a fun and kitchy happy hour.
Best food ever, albeit expensive, was Saba Rock. I would look into staying in a Villa .

If I had my way I would rent a crewed, live - a -board, sailboat and tour ALL the islands.

Also if you are flying into Gorda - Trade winds airline is the way to go. They have a great lounge in San Juan - a very lux feel to the whole experience.
