I am pondering traveling to Uruguay and possibly adding Chile in as well. I am a bit of a wine tourist and like to include some wine visits in my travels. Has anyone used a particular tour to visit these places that you would recommend or any other resources you might direct me to to learn more about travel here?
In Santiago de Chile we arranged tours to Undurraga and Concha y Toro wineries through our hotel.
Thank you.
There are several "Bodegas" near Las Piedras, about 30 min north of Montevideo. Was planning to visit the Bodega Pizzorno when visiting family there in MVD, but didn't end up going. There is a bus that goes there, but Uber or even a taxi in MVD is not expensive, so we often relied on those. If you plan to go to more than one then maybe an organized tour is better, but I haven't looked into that.
Montevideo is nice, but doesn't have a whole lot to see, so you can probably see everything in the city in a couple of days. The beaches are nice but the water is not, it's kind of murky brown due to the sediments coming down from the Uruguay River and Parana River flowing into the Rio de la Plata. However I recommend you visit also Buenos Aires while there. There is the super fast and fancy ferry, called "Francisco", operated by the Buquebus company, that can get you across the Rio De La Plata estuary in less than 2 hours. It's the fastest passenger ferry in the world so you'll enjoy the ride and it's not choppy as the Rio de la Plata is a calm body of water. Buenos Aires has a lot more to see. Argentina also produces a lot of wine, but their wineries tend to be near Mendoza, although there were tasting rooms in Buenos Aires. In Buenos Aires taxicabs are everywhere and you can get one anytime there are so many all over, however Uber is half the price if you don't mind the extra 5 min wait. Also taxicabs like to be paid in cash and will charge you more if you use a credit card.
We visited Uruguay while on a cruise around the Horn (two ports), Uruguay, Argentina and Chile are more European than the rest of South America.
We visited vineyards in Chile and Argentina, don't remember their names.
