For Americans, travel insurance within the U.S. is not usually needed because the largest potential expense would be for emergency medical care. For a non-American, however, they may need travel insurance.
It comes down to how emergency medical expenses would be paid for if a traveler were to experience, say, a fractured ankle or arm. Most Americans already have health insurance that will cover emergency medical expenses and a trip to a hospital emergency room. A foreign traveler without any medical coverage in the U.S. is exposed to a lot of out-of-pocket medical expenses and that’s the biggest reason to have a travel insurance policy.
There are other benefits travel insurance provides such as lost luggage, trip delay and trip cancellation coverage. The possible costs of not having insurance for those scenarios, though, pale in comparison to what medical costs a traveler without insurance could incur.
