Hi there! I recently started to live like a digital nomad, made a switch to working fully online and traveling at the same time. I want to visit China, but I started researching the restrictions of using different apps and data, and it was pretty overwhelming. Maybe someone has any tips on how to stay connected to Instagram, and Twitter? I am planning to have an eSIM for my data needs, specifically Saily, so I am pretty confident I will at least have data there. Any tips are appreciated!
Research private, secure VPNs installed before arrival. As you note, many restrictions with common apps and websites unavailable within China.
Don’t mention that you are working.
You need a VPN and I have to say it may still be very slow.... at last when I was there... Without a VPN you will have access to very little.
So, if you use a VPN to access restricted sites is that a violation of Chinese law?
probably, eh?
If you want to visit China, feel free to do so. Personally, I wouldn’t work while there and wouldn’t take any electronics. If taken aside at the airport, spyware could be installed on your devices. In addition, everything you do online is provided to the government by law. Enjoy your trip but be cognizant of possible ramifications of working there and accessing sites not approved by the government.
If your digital work involves any of your company's proprietary information, do not access it in China.
If you follow the VPN advice, please write a Trip Report.
