Hi, we are headed to Thailand for the first time and I'd love feedback on our itinerary. Our group is 2 adults and one 12 year old.
Arrive Bangkok May 31st - afternoon - 2 nights
Chai Lai Orchid outside of Bangkok - 2 nights
Sukothai - 2 nights
Chiang Mai - 3 nights
Phang Nga - 3 nights
Krabi - 4 nights
Bangkok - 1 more night and 1 full day
Thanks!
Personally I would try to twist the schedule so I could visit the weekend market in Bangkok.
Jennifer, I have been in Thailand several times, but not for a number of years. I am not familiar with Phang Nga or Krabi, sio cannot comment on those. I always focused my time in the north, with Chiang Mai as a base, so I might encourage a couple more nights there. In addition to the many sites and experiences in Chiang Mai itself, there are a number of very interesting day or overnights trips that can be made there, including to hill tribe villages. When I was there, there were a number of local travel companies that offered what they called "treks", with a variety of 1-night treks, 2-night treks, often up to 5-night treks. Unlike Himalayan treks which are basically walking over mountain trails, the treks in Northern Thailand included a combination of bus, van, longtail canoe, elephant back, and walking, quite an experience, and often visited colorful hill tribe villages. Quite an experience.
Be aware of the weather. It will be hot (high 80s to mid-90s) and and humid (80-90%) in most places most of the time, with possible daily showers. While it's fine for spending time relaxing on the beach and snorkling, it can be enervating if you want to sightsee. Don't try to fill up days in Chiang Mai or Bangkok with lots of sights and there are many beautiful ones.
Thanks to everyone who replied! I appreciate your input! Best, Jen.
