travel from Europe to the US via Canada

Does anyone know if you go through customs in Montreal when you final destination is in the US? Trying to plan flights and wondering if an hour is adequate time to make connections. thanks

It is US Immigration aka Passport Control, not customs.

It's both Immigration and Customs. That's why you can just walk out of the airport when you arrive in the US.

And therefore, the procedure includes retrieving any checked luggage for the customs & agriculture portion of the check, then putting them back on a conveyor belt, since they're already tagged to your final destination.

IF you are booking your flights on a single ticket, then whatever connection time you end up with should be enough.

I would personally want more than an hour simply because your inbound flight might be late, there might be a longer than necessary line at the US Immigration check, and so on. I have found the security check after US Immigration in both Montreal and Toronto is quick and efficient.

We flew Munich-Vancouver-Portland on Lufthansa/Air Canada and we went through customs and passport control in Vancouver. We did not have to collect our checked bags in Vancouver. They went straight through to PDX. I would not chance a one hour connection, even on a domestic flight. You board 30 minutes before departure for most flights, which gives you 30 minutes to de-plane, get through passport control and customs and get to the next gate. Any delay at all could mean missing your flight.
