Transportation help LGA to Bronxville (with report)

I’ve been looking at some recent threads about transportation options through NYC and I decided to ask for help with our specific situation. We are arriving at LGA at the end of the month on a Tuesday at 6pm. There are three of us on two different flights but all SWA so same terminal. We are helping our youngest granddaughter move in to her freshman dorm at Sarah Lawrence C so we will most likely each have one(?) checked bag. She is also bringing her cello in a hard case. We are going on to other east coast locations for three additional weeks after our three nights in Bronxville to drop her off.

We haven’t flown through or into LGA in many years. Our granddaughter took a string of public transportation options to do this journey, with a single carryon, in April to visit the school. My gut tells me to take a taxi/van from the rank or Uber/Lyft XL. Any NYC travelers have any opinions, tips or insight for us?

You can take a bus to the MetroNorth at 125th, but a taxi or two would be far easier.

LGA has benefited greatly after years of upgrades, so if you haven't been through in years, you will be pleasantly surprised. There is still some construction going on, and the public transportation access is still limited to bus service. Uber is your best bet, IMO. While I don't travel to Bronxville, I do go to Manhattan and Brooklyn a few times a year and it's just SO much easier and faster to take a cab or an Uber/Lyft from LGA and not have to deal with luggage, maps, directions, etc. - AND you get dropped off right at your destination.

Not sure I would rent a car unless you are familiar with city driving, and have really great blood pressure lol

Haha Frank II my husband mentioned renting a car yesterday and I kind of panicked since it’s been so long since we’ve driven near and in NYC. It does seem like a straightforward route on 678 to get up to Bronxville. I just didn’t want to have the stress of city driving. I’m willing to consider all options though with some personal recommendations from people like yourself who’ve done similar routes.

EDIT: I didn’t know this but yesterday he priced a 3 day rental and it is about $225-$300. He was planning to keep the car to get us to and from the airport, college move in day + pick up any dorm accessories she needs. I think it might be about the cost of a taxi or Uber for transportation to and from the airport. I should look up official rates of taxis.

It pretty much all expressway to Bronxville. Go east and take the Whitestone Bridge to the Hutchinson River Parkway, then west on the Cross County Parkway.

I lived in the city for 15 years, drove those roads weekly, and am now on them bimonthly, at least. Between stress, hassle, and expenses, there's no way I would consider renting a car for this.

Given the luggage and the Cello , I would rent the car and tolerate the traffic ( there will be lots , it's rush hour } . I live close to Bronxville , and once you get there , traffic will be easing up and the car will be the most convenient way to get around

In my meticulous planning we have booked a hotel at the Cross County Mall complex which is a 4 minute walk onto the southern edge of her campus. That’s one reason I thought a 3 day car rental was a bit of an overkill. Even though the 3 of us arrive on a Tuesday (with all of the luggage and cello), my husband and I fly at 4:30pm from LGA to Virginia on a Friday so I’m pretty confident the two of us with a more manageable amount of luggage can do the reverse trip from Bronxville to LGA by train and bus, thanks Scudder for that routing upthread.

Thanks for all of your tips and suggestions so far. We really appreciate your knowledge and experience are considering all of them. Very helpful!

I grew up in the area. Rent a car. Public transportation in Westchester County is miserable to nonexistent. Car services like Uber are expensive. As an alternative, take a car service from LGA to hotel and pick up rental car somewhere in Westchester County. I googled car rentals in Westchester and there are several.

Quick follow up:
Thanks for all of your help and suggestions. We were beyond amazed at the efficiency, public art, staffing and thoughtful design at terminal B at LaGuardia. Wow, good job with the airport remodel.

We used a minivan from the taxi rank to get the 3 of us, luggage and cello to our hotel in Yonkers/Bronxville. It cost about what I estimated, $90 with tip. The two of us with only two pieces of luggage priced a Lyft on our time and day of departure (noon, not rush hour). The Lyft ride was $50 with tip. During our 1 free day we took bus and subway into Manhattan and train back to our hotel and saw how we could make transitions to get us to LGA. However we decided to do a Lyft ride on our actual departure day. Grandaughter is looking forward to her new school and exploring NYC using all combinations of transportation available to her.

Excellent ! That sounds like $90 well spent !! Especially with that cello in the mix. I hope she has a great experience at university !

That's also very sweet of you to help her move in.
