Tour suggestions and/or tour operator suggestions for Jordan (especially Petra)

Hello!

We have our trip to Egypt figured out, and we would now like to add three to four days in Jordan. We want to spend at least two of those days in Petra. We would appreciate any suggestions on how to get safely and efficiently from Amman to Petra (Wadi Rum) where we already have a hotel (refundable) reserved for July. My husband does not want us to drive, so we would need another way to get from the airport to Petra. Then once in Petra, can anyone suggest a reliable tour guide? We aren't good with haggling, so we'd want everything to be figure out before we arrived. Any and all advice is much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Mari,
Perhaps your hotel can suggest a guide?
You can email and ask them.

How did you find your Egypt company? Use similar tactics? I found my Egypt guide from ToursByLocals website. She had great reviews, and I did some more google searches and found her reviews on TripAdvisor as well. If it were me, I would do similar for the Petra trip. Chances are they could arrange a private driver for you too. I decided to take a look and this one might suit...he seems to be the only one to guide Petra from Amman

You should easily be able to get a cab via your hotel in Amman for the drive to Petra. I believe there are two ways and that the Kings' highway is the preferred route (more scenic - but do some research). You may want to have the cabbie stop at Kerak castle and explore that on the way down.

When we went we did not get a guide for Petra - much perfer exploring on our own. Do a search for prior posts on Petra as I noted some of the following before:
- plan to be at the entrance before it opens - this way you will have the place to yourself and can leisurely explore
- Petra is vast - plan for it. Bring water and a hat. By noon time it will get quite hot. Would be awesome if your hotel is near the entrance to rest in the afternoon (Note - I don't know if you can go in and out on the same ticket so please check)
- Enjoy

Try to visit Jerash, I loved it at least as much as Petra. I don't think Petra itself is worth more than one full day, but if you can get a jeep tour of Wadi Rum, that's a great thing to do.

Several years ago I was on a guided tour (small group, just 4 people) arranged through an Israeli company. The guide was Yahia Ali M. Falahat, mobile 00 962 777 755903, or yahia_falahat@yahoo.com. He had an air-conditioned jeep, a thorough knowledge of the desert (much of the time we were off-road, amazing how he found his way around) and a very good sense of humour.

Thanks so much for all the advice. Did you find taking the Jett bus from Amman to Petra was the best travel option?
