Tour in Cuba

Does anyone have experience taking a tour in Cuba?

I really like the many Rick Steves tours I've taken, and realize there may not be the same quality available for a Cuba trip, but if there's any ideas out there I'd love to hear them.

I live in Seattle, so it's not a problem for me to drive out of the United States up to Vancouver to depart and arrive back through Canada if that makes it easier.

One of our former staff enjoyed her trip with Insight Cuba. She clearly said it wasn't like a Rick Steves tour, but it all worked and focused on "people to people travel."

Definitely check out Insight Cuba as Laura suggested! Because of the embargo, leisurely independent style travel to Cuba is unfortunately still not permitted for Americans. So while hopping on over to Vancouver and catching a flight seems easy enough, it is definitely not legal! Insight Cuba makes it simple for you providing you with not only your paperwork to show you were there legally but with flights direct from Miami to Cuba. Even though you are on a tour, Insight Cuba still provides you with the opportunity to have that unique one-on-one interaction with the Cuban people and culture that many of us travelers crave! I have been on two tours with Insight Cuba myself, and am still amazed by the people I met, the incredible culture I encountered, and the off-the-beaten path locations I visited. If you want to see Cuba before it changes, now is definitely the time to do so!

I can recommend Havana Tour who run excellent trips around Cuba. Often the tours will concentrate on either the east of the country with Santiago and Baracoa both highlights or the west which might include Pinar del Rio and Trinidad.

If you like Cuban music we have also used Songlines Music Travel based in London which runs a couple of tours a year. We really enjoyed them.

For an American citizen, if you wish to go to Cuba legally it has to be as a part of a US State department approved cultural exchange program. These are often sponsored by universities, art and history museums, etc. The group is tightly controlled and you have to participate in all of the planned cultural events. You can go through Canada or Mexico, and some have, but the fine is substantial if caught. Not sure how they catch you. And you have to go a lot of preplanning because Am debit and credit cards do not work and dollars exchanged for pesos are subject to a huge surcharge so it is best to use Canadian dollars or Euro. We are going in January. So will post a travel report when we return.
