Let me ask you this - for an older couple looking for a short stay (two full days) with an interest in the water puppets and food - what would you recommend all day person or these students?

Hanoi is ok to be explored on one's own. However, crossing the street is not for the faint of heart. Download an app called Grab, which is the Uber in SE Asia. Use it to go to places.

For Hanoi Kids, I suggest you contact them to see what they offer. School is back and the kids may be busy. Perhaps use a guide (Hanoi Kids or a private one) to get your bearings on the first day, at the very least.

For food, you can take a food tour.
