Tour companies for Japan

Almost all the major tour companies are there. You can find just about any tour to fit your budget. I will say that all the buses seem to end up in the same parking lots and going to the same sights, so you may want to look at elements such as group size, price and hotel rankings if the itineraries are similar.

I used Inspiring Vacations which is a company based out of Australia. It had the itinerary I wanted at the price that I wanted. I was pleased with the tour which I took in Spring 2025 during Cherry Blossom time. Other tour companies that I have seen there include Gate 1, Intrepid, Globus. I have gone on Gate 1 tours elsewhere and they were good. My brother went on an Intrepid tour and really enjoyed it though you might find it the more expensive option.

I have not been to Japan, but have taken five OAT trips elsewhere that were excellent. Their groups are limited to 16 people and the guides ranged from good to fabulous. Their itineraries usually include the usual tourist spots as well as home-hosted meals and discussions with locals on”controversial topics.”

I went to India with Road Scholar and it was a wonderful tour. They see themselves as “educational” and include lectures and other learning experiences.

I have been on two Gate 1 trips - one in southern India (excellent!) and the other in the Baltics (quite good, but not as good as the Rick Steves European tours.) Both of these were “Discovery” tours that are limited to 22 people and are more inclusive than their other tour categories. These other tours can be as large as 40 people - a hard pass for me.

Imprint Tours and Adventures with Sarah are both run by former Rick Steves guides who now have their own companies traveling around the world. I have not travelled with them but have heard great things. I will be taking my first Imprint Tour this fall.

Tauck is very high-end, too expensive for me, but I’ve heard good things from others. They really take care of you. Same, I believe, with Smithsonian. Odyssey Unlimited is similar to OAT.

Loved Japan. I went with a tour company based in Australia and the UK. Wendy Wu. They were great. I went on their "Japan Uncovered" trip. 17 days. There were 22 on my trip, 17 from Australia and 5 Brits.

Their headline prices in the examples below (UK and Aus) include an amount for economy international flights. They were very good at sorting out business class flights for me when I booked.

Many tour companies operate in Japan. However, not many will offer tours when you want to go. It's not the busiest time of year for tourism.

Also take a look at the temperature charts for the areas you wish to visit.

We love Gate 1 Travel, but did Japan before Gate 1 rose to have tours of Japan.

We found local tour companies on TripAdvisor.com that worked out well, especially one that visited Nara and Kyoto for three nights.
Do not miss those places.

Also recommend visiting Nikko, north of Tokyo and Osaka/Kobe.

Just compare three or four tours and pick the one that provides the best for least $$.

I took the Classic Japan tour with Inside Japan. The tour had 14 members. We primarily used public transportation to get from place to place. The only negative was there were a couple of places where it would have been nice to have a local guide in addition to our tour leader. To be fair, we were supposed to have a local guide in Kyoto but the guide was sick at the last minute so our tour leader had to fill in. He did a good job but we missed a little local flavor.

I also used Inside Japan to arrange independent travel. I was very happy with the arrangements they made. For my independent travel, they arranged hotels, train tickets, a private guide, and a sake tasting for me. They also sent detailed instructions and guides for each city we visited.

For your timeframe, you might consider arranging independent travel with Inside Japan. They also have some January tours.

I have traveled quite a few times with both companies and like them - I only do their small group departures.
My upcoming Road Scholar trip is a group of 14.

I took the Cultural Treasures of Japan with OAT this year in late April, early May. Our group was smaller, about 16 people. I booked in November because of the no single supplement special offer. The tour company and our guide were well organized. Our hotels were 3 or 4 star and well located for the sights we saw.

We had some unique experiences along the way including a private sumo demonstration, gold leaf shop tour, a mountain top Zen temple visit in Kyoto, drumming factory and demonstration in Tokyo, many local markets & significant shrines, a wood inlay craftsman shop, a Japanese home visit, our Hakone hotel had onsen baths and a visit to a working farm and homestead.

We used chartered buses, local transportation and the Shinkansen between Hakone and Kanazawa.

This was my first trip with OAT and I was very satisfied. I have taken tours with Gate1 and Rick Steves, all of which were great.
