Tokyo Airports to Tokyo

I'm flying LAX to Tokyo in October. I have a choice of two flight....one to Narita, one to Haneda. Both are the same price. Haneda arrives at around 2 PM, Narita around 4 PM.

Although Narita is further away, it seem with the Narita Express, the time and ease into town is nearly the same as Haneda.

For those of you who have flown in to Tokyo, which airport should I choose? (I'm flyin back out of Osaka so a return for Tokyo isn't necessary.) My plan is train/monorail into Tokyo and then taxi to my hotel.

We flew into Narita and the Narita Express was great and easy to buy tickets and drag your luggage onto the train. The train took us to Tokyo Station where our hotel was located, so we didn't need a taxi at all.

Be sure you go to Kyoto, it is wonderful.

I'd be inclined to take the earlier flight, so to Haneda, but the practicality of transportation largely depends on the location of your hotel. Where are you staying?

Personally, I always preferred Haneda when I had to travel there frequently on business. The airport is close enough to the city that grabbing a taxi for door to door service to the hotel becomes a cost-effective option.

Haneda is much closer and will take less time to get into Tokyo. If the price is equal choose Haneda. It is usually higher.

We flew into Narita last year from Houston and took the airport limousine bus to our hotel. It was very easy and dropped us off right at the hotel. Ride into Tokyo took about an hour and a half. We took the Narita Express from Yokohama to Narita for our return. That worked well too.

I find three intercontinentals and they all look very convenient to Haneda. It wouldn't be crazy to take a cab directky to the one on Tokyo bay from haneda.

I'm flying into Narita due to the type of plane.....new 787 over older 777.

Narita Express to Tokyo Station and then cab to my hotel. I believe it is in Minato.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

If your hotel is in Minato, consider taking the Narita Express to Shinagawa. It's closer to Minato and is a smaller station (so easier to navigate than Tokyo Station).

Haneda is the far better choice in most cases. Very close or almost in the city and well connected with the Monorail or the Keikyu line as well as several cheap, frequent and direct bus services to various places in the metropolis area. However, the buss routes/destinations and their departure times may be more tricky to understand.

I flew to and from Narita. With the Express we got into Tokyo very fast.

My husband and I got the JR Pass before leaving because we were going to do long distance travel while in Japan. After clearing customs we went to the JR offices and activated our passes, which includes the Express from Narita.

But I know you can get tickets for the Express once you’re at the airport.
