After 7 1/2 weeks and 9,837 miles we arrived back home to Arlington TX on Sunday. It was a great trip up and back to Fairbanks AK to visit our daughter, son in law and our 2 mostly perfect granddaughters. We usually fly up for quick visits every 6 to 8 months but this time we brought our Lab, Bailey and pulled our travel trailer and camped as we went.
We’ve made the drive 4 times since my husband retired in 2013. The first 2 times we crossed into Canada from Montana but the last 2 trips we drove pretty much due north from Ft Worth/Arlington and came in at North Portal in North Dakota. Starting the drive through Saskatchewan and Alberta was enjoyable for us even though it’s pretty flat; my husband loves to see the farmland. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and helpful from the border guards, to the grocery store folks and people we met in campgrounds. Thanks for the Tim Horton goodies, thanks for your Real Canadian super stores and their big selection and big parking lots. Special thanks for your wonderful Provincial Parks, we loved camping in them. And Jasper National Park is truly beautiful. Thanks for the Bison, Black Bear, Stone Sheep and Moose sightings along the way. It was a great experience.
For some practical information, this trip we used international cell service with our Consumer Cellular contract instead of getting a eSIM or a Canadian actual SIM card after crossing the border. It worked seamlessly and we were pleased. Of course, out on some parts of the Alaskan Highway in the Yukon there was no coverage no matter what your choice might have been. Both legs of our Canada trip came to $37.13 for about 15GB.
