We will be in Rabat for a tour and thinking of going to Tangier. Is it worth seeing Tangier on our own? Is it safe on our own or should we get a guide? We will have luggage, so don't want a train; what is the best way for us Seniors to get from Rabat to Tangier or vice versa should we fly into Tangier (is that possible)? Sorry, just starting my research and didn't ck flights from the U.S.
It's quite a while since I have been in Tangier, and I have read that it is been tidied up since.
I wouldn't go again.
If you have time while in Rabat, cross the river to Sale - there are some lovely historic buidlings and an area of ruins famous for the noise made by all the storks, the locals call them "clack clack birds".
I was in Tangier in early 2025. I enjoyed it a lot. It felt very safe.
What other destinations in Morocco are included in your tour?
There is a fast train from Rabat to Tangier. Is there a reason why having luggage makes the train unappealing? You say you are seniors; are you capable of handling your own luggage? If not, then maybe you'd want a private driver, otherwise you will have to manage your luggage however you are traveling.
Tangier …. Takes me back to 1983, a college student traveling around Europe, Spain and Portugal were really cheap back then as well as fun, so my buddy and I went there for much of the summer. Met two cool Australians in Seville. On to Morocco. We were going to ferry to Tangier and then continue on to Meknes and Fes. There was a couple hours between ferry arrival and train departure. During that time, we got overcharged in a tourist restaurant as it was Ramadan and there was nowhere else to eat, endlessly harassed by touts, my friend got ripped off buying a leather bag, and we ran into an insane man who followed us around throwing stones, luckily they weren’t too big as one hit me in the head, and he kept yelling at us, so you go to Meknes? I go to Meknes too and I KILL you! Before too long one of the Australians said to his friend George, “George, I don’t like it here.” We all agreed, turned around and went back to the ferry port, and caught the next ship back to Spain. I’ve been to 74 countries, the only one I’ve fled from, hating it, is Tangier Morocco.
I hear it’s better now. Maybe.
There is nothing remotely appealing about Tangier in my opinion. If you enjoy being ripped off, harassed, engaging in animal cruelty and want to experience the ill treatment and subjugation of women then by all means go but I would never return.
Tangier is definitely worth a visit! To truly explore the city, especially the Hercules Cave and Cape Spartel, a car is essential. For the old town, consider hiring a local guide for a less stressful experience. We hired a tour company that took care of all our transportation and guides, making the whole trip so much easier for us, As for flights, direct options to Casablanca are available, and from there, you can take the high-speed train.
