Hello Rick Steves hive mind! I'm starting to gather options for Morocco in 2025. The tours I'm looking at all begin/end in Casablanca, and I'd like to do a post-tour side trip up to Tangier and Gibraltar. However it seems all the Tangier <---> Gibraltar ferries only go to Algeciras or La Linea on the Spanish side of the border. Are there no direct ferries that don't require going through Spain?
There is a direct ferry between Gibraltar and Tangier, it's operated by FRS Iberia however there are only a few sailings a month.
Morocco is great, especially Marrakesh and Fes. Also, Agidar and Rabat.
Frankly, you can skip Casablanca, about the only thing to see there is a large Mosque.
Tangier --- don't go out of your way to see it. It is like Tijuana is to San Diego.
I just got back (two weeks ago) from a cruise that included a stop in Casablanca and in Tangier. I agree that really the only thing to see in Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque – it is especially pretty at night all lit up.
I’m in the minority here, but I liked Tangier…didn’t “love” it but liked it. I would not make the effort to go there again but it wasn’t a bad place to spend a day. I liked Gibraltar, too and wouldn’t mind returning there someday.
If I were to ever go to Morocco again (which I probably won’t), I would skip Casablanca and go to Marrakesh and Fes.
